PETAL, Miss. – During its meeting on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, the Petal School District Board of Trustees approved the hiring of Scott Tyson as the new assistant principal at Petal High School. He replaces Dr. Joel Bowman, who was promoted to principal of Petal Middle School.

Tyson joins Petal High with nine years of experience as assistant principal at the high school level, the last seven at South Jones High School, where he was named the 2021 District Administrator of the Year. He also served as assistant principal at Stone County High School for two years. He began his career as a history teacher, assistant football coach, and head girls’ soccer coach at Northeast Jones. Tyson was named Mississippi’s 2011 All Star Soccer Coach, and the team held the title of 4A State Champions in 2010 and 2011 under his leadership.

Tyson says his favorite quote is “Teamwork Makes the Dream Work.”

“I am looking forward to working as a team with all of the great people that make up Petal High School,” said Tyson. “I feel blessed and honored to be a part of such a great place.”

Tyson earned a bachelor’s degree in Coaching and Sports Administration from The University of Southern Mississippi and a master’s degree in Secondary Education from William Carey University. He is also working on a specialist degree.

“We are very excited to welcome Scott Tyson to Petal High School,” said Dr. Matt Dillon, Petal School District superintendent. “Based on his skill set and leadership experience, I am confident he will bring a new perspective to our administration and be a great asset to the team.”

Tyson and his wife LaDona (choir director at Pearl River Community College) reside in Petal and have two daughters: Claire, who will be a freshman at Petal High; and Norah, who will be in third grade at Petal Elementary.
