Administrators from the Petal School District recently attended the 2012 National Conference on College and Career Readiness and Common Core State Standards. The district was honored with an award for thoroughly implementing curriculum through Lesson Study groups. Shown in the picture is Petal School District Superintendent Dr. John Buchanan accepting the award and addressing the attendees at the national conference held in Chicago, IL. Lesson Study is a process by which teachers meet on a daily basis to plan, research, discuss and critique lessons for students in each subject area. The Petal school administrators and teachers have been working in Lesson Study groups for several years and started focusing on Common Core State Standards this past school year. For 2012-2013, CCSS will be fully implemented at all grade levels in the district. Common Core State Standards have been adopted by forty-five states and will help ensure that academic expectations are consistent among the participating states.
