The Petal School Board recognized Petal High School Senior Nate Godwin at their November 10, 2015 meeting. As a student in Dr. Krystin Holmes’ polymer class at Petal High School, Godwin expressed an interest in the field of polymers and engineering. Dr. Holmes contacted the University of Southern Mississippi regarding Nate’s interests and the Polymer Science Department offered an opportunity for Nate to work in the lab of Dr. Jeffrey Wiggins. Godwin assisted Dr. Wiggins on a research project that involved putting carbon nanotubes into materials for airplanes. On September 28, 2015, Godwin was invited to present his work to representatives of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and Boeing Research and Technology, who helped fund the project at the university level. He was given the opportunity to spend the afternoon with these researchers who are the top people in their fields and was given high praise by Dr. Wiggins, who also serves as the polymer science department chair. This was an excellent opportunity for Nate to meet and visit with renowned scientists.
