Marilyn Barber and Chuck Russell share a hug!
Petal School District bus driver, Marilyn Barber, was honored at the August 12th School Board Meeting for using skills she learned through a school district initiative to save a man's life. Mrs. Barber and her husband, Glenn Barber, were at a local gas station in late June when Chuck Russell, who was at the gas pump next to the Barbers, suffered a massive heart attack. Within seconds Mrs. Barber began administering CPR. Her husband joined with her and they continued the chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation until emergency personnel arrived. Doctors told Russell that if life-saving techniques had not occurred as soon as they did he might not have survived. Marilyn Barber was trained in CPR through the "Petal to the Rescue" program which offered CPR training to all school district employees and the entire Petal community. Retired Allied Health teacher Mary Hill was awarded a $25,000 grant through State Farm Insurance to implement the program in 2012. In addition to recognizing Mrs. Barber, the school board also was pleased to honor Chuck Russell, Mary Hill and State Farm Insurance Agent Adam Patrick.
