Petal Middle School History Department hosted the “Giant Traveling Map of South America” from the National Geographic Society
On February 10th and 11th, the Petal Middle School History Department hosted the “Giant Traveling Map of South America” from the National Geographic Society. Barbara Boone and Carol Paola, teacher consultants from the Mississippi Geographic Alliance, facilitated the map activities. The map experience is made possible through a partnership with the Mississippi Geographic Alliance and the National Geographic Society. The map travels throughout the United States and is available in Mississippi only during the month of February. "Sponsoring this map is a very prestigious opportunity for our school," stated Mrs. Cathy Lee, seventh grade World History teacher. The activities physically involve students in order to increase spatial, ecological, and global perspectives. The activities also assist students in using geographic representations and increase students' geospatial and spatial thinking to understand the world around them. Students should be able to use the tools available to them and develop their knowledge base and awareness of themselves and the place they live. Additionally, teachers are shown how the Common Core standards can be approached through geography in an enjoyable way. The lessons taught during the map activity help students connect their knowledge of the world to their personal lives, equipping them to become better global citizens.
