PETAL, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) released today statewide accountability grades from the 2023-24 Mississippi Academic Assessment Program (MAAP), positioning Petal School District as the number two district in the state, and one of only four that rank in the overall Top 10 in three state test subjects.
MAAP measures students’ academic growth and proficiency, and stems from four areas: English Language Arts, Mathematics, Biology/Science, and U.S. History. Petal Middle, Petal High, and the district scores are the highest ever on this accountability model.

“I am so proud of our results, which showed growth in three categories and are the highest since the inception of this accountability model,” said Dr. Matt Dillon, Petal School District superintendent of schools. “Congratulations to our team of teachers, support staff, students, administrators and families!”
“As I have said before, my takeaway from our proficiency results is sustained success. The ability to have consistent results year in and year out is a major indicator of a successful organization, and our district continues to do just that,” said Dillon.
