Superintendent Dillon receives Mississippi School Boards Association Leadership in Governance Award

Petal, Miss. — Dr. Matt Dillon, Superintendent of the Petal School District (PSD), has been named the recipient of the 2025–26 Mississippi School Boards Association (MSBA) Leadership in Governance Award.

This distinguished honor recognizes a School Board and Superintendent who exemplify outstanding leadership, strategic governance and a steadfast commitment to academic excellence.  To qualify for the MSBA Leadership in Governance Award, a district must demonstrate high academic performance and be led by a superintendent who has served at least 10 consecutive years in the role. Under Dr. Dillon’s leadership, the PSD has maintained strong academic outcomes while implementing strategic initiatives designed to support continuous improvement across all campuses.

Dr. Dillon’s tenure has provided the consistency needed to build strong systems, cultivate effective leadership teams and create an environment where all students can learn and thrive. His collaborative approach with the Board of Trustees has strengthened governance practices and ensured that every decision remains focused on what is best for students.

“Dr. Dillon is a dynamic leader and the Petal School District has been fortunate to have him guiding our district for the past decade,” said Jerry DeFatta, Chairman of the Board. “I am grateful that MSBA is recognizing him for the impactful work he does for the benefit of education in our state and beyond.”
