PETAL, Miss. – Petal Primary School (PPS) will host its annual Kindergarten Roundup event beginning Monday, April 22 – Thursday, April 25. The event offers incoming kindergartners a head start to the upcoming school year, while giving families the opportunity to get them pre-registered. Students will also participate in a basic screener to evaluate their knowledge of letters, sounds, numbers and vocabulary, and to ensure there are no speech concerns.

“The purpose of this screener is to help our admin team get to know incoming students,” said Tessa Trimm, PPS principal. “We are not looking for a certain score. Instead, we are hoping to identify strengths and needs to place students well. The Roundup event also helps us with our staffing plan, so we encourage everyone to sign up so that we can prepare for the number of kindergartners we will have for the 2024-25 school year,” Trimm said.

The Roundup event schedule is as follows:

• April 22, 23, 24: Petal Preschool Roundup – PPS will screen at all preschools in Petal. Please check with your center for more details.
   
• April 25: Roundup for all others – PPS will screen any students not enrolled in preschool or those enrolled in preschool outside of Petal. Screenings will take place at the primary school.

Kindergarten Information Day will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 4, at the PPS campus located at 60 Herrington Road in Petal. The purpose of this come-and-go event is to give incoming kindergartners and their families the chance to visit campus before the new school year begins. The tours will be self-guided with teachers and staff available to answer questions.

“We are so excited to welcome our incoming kindergartners,” said Trimm. “We want to make sure all the kids in the community are ready for school and that we are ready for them.”

To participate in Kindergarten Roundup, families must submit the online registration form found on the Petal Primary School website at https://pps.petalschools.com. Students must live in the Petal School District and be five years old on or before September 1 to be eligible for kindergarten. For more information, contact PPS at 601.554.7244.
