Panther Brew: Growing One Cup At A Time

What began as a simple idea—and a table in the library and a coffee machine—has grown into a beloved campus tradition and a powerful learning initiative within the Special Education program at Petal High School.

In 2017, Panther Brew was launched thanks to a grant from Mississippi Professional Educators (MPE), providing the initial funding to bring the vision to life. The grant made it possible to purchase essential supplies, including a Keurig machine, aprons, a cash register, and coffee and baking materials. With limited space at the time, the operation started modestly, using a small table in the school library as its first “counter.”

As Panther Brew gained momentum, the school’s maintenance department stepped in to support the growing program by building a permanent cabinet and counter in the library, complete with storage space for supplies. This upgrade allowed the program to operate more efficiently and signaled that Panther Brew was becoming a lasting part of campus life.

From the beginning, students in the community-based class were at the heart of Panther Brew. They rotated through meaningful job roles—barista, cashier, greeter, and sign holder—giving each student hands-on experience in a real-world work environment. Each morning before school, students served hot coffee and baked sweets to staff and fellow students, building relationships and confidence along the way.

Beyond the counter, learning continued in the classroom. Students created shopping lists, baked the daily treats, and shopped for supplies at local grocery stores. They practiced money skills by paying at grocery store registers and managing funds earned through sales and donations. Profits were reinvested into class activities and even served as a “paycheck,” reinforcing the value of their work and time.

“The Panther Brew allows us to bring real life experiences to our community based and alternate diploma/resource students,” said teacher Heather Reid. “ They learn practical and realistic ways to count money, interact with customers, engage with co-workers, make lists and shop for inventory, and exhibit a higher level of responsibility and accountability that resembles an integrated workforce.”

While running Panther Brew, students have focused on developing essential life and workplace skills, including communication with customers, proper hygiene, teamwork, and money management. The program seamlessly blended academic goals with real-life application, allowing students to meet multiple learning objectives in an engaging and practical way.

Over the years, Panther Brew has continued to evolve. It has moved from the library to a mobile cart, to an outdoor setup behind campus, and now into its newest permanent home—the concession stand in the cafeteria. Along with the new location came an upgraded menu, now featuring hot and cold coffee, daily sweets, and even Friday frappuccinos.

Still funded entirely through student and staff donations, Panther Brew remains a powerful example of how innovation, community support, and student-driven learning can come together. More than just a coffee stand, Panther Brew is a place where students gain independence, confidence, and skills that will serve them well beyond the school day—one cup at a time.
