Hutchinson Selected for the Mississippi Governor’s School

PETAL, Miss. – Petal High School senior Amelia Hutchinson was recently selected as a participant in the 45 cohort of the Mississippi Governor’s School. She is one of only 60 students chosen for the statewide program.
The Mississippi Governor’s School is a residential honors program established in 1981 by Governor William F. Winter at Mississippi Governor’s School and Mississippi University for Women. Hutchinson began the program on May 31 and will complete her residency on June 13.
The Governor’s School is a free program designed to provide academic, creative, and leadership experiences for a limited number of rising high school juniors and seniors. Students qualify by demonstrating exceptional achievement in their studies, while possessing intellectual, creative, and leadership potential.
"The honor of being a part of the 45th Governor’s School has given me the opportunity to connect with students from across Mississippi,” said Amelia. “Having access to educational experiences that may not be available in my community, while engaging in student-led intellectual discussions that extend far beyond this two-week program, has been incredibly valuable.”
At Petal High School, Hutchinson is a member of the Swim Team, Tennis Team, Diamond Girls, and the State Championship Speech and Debate Team. She is also a member of Petal High School’s Beta Club and the Mayor’s Youth Council. Amelia recently participated in Petal’s Distinguished Young Woman Program, where she placed second overall and won the overall interview portion of the program.
“We are thrilled Amelia was selected for the Mississippi's 45th Governor’s School and this incredible opportunity,” said Paige Hutchinson, Amelia’s Mother. “She has worked hard both inside and outside the classroom, and this experience allows her to showcase her talents while learning alongside some of the state's most outstanding students.”
After graduation, Hutchinson plans to attend the Georgia Institute of Technology and pursue a degree in Engineering.
