Fairy Tales in Motion

A magical collaboration is bringing fairy tales to life across the Petal School District — and it all began with the imagination of second graders.

In Mrs. Sarah Woods’ second grade classroom at Petal Primary School, students recently became authors and illustrators, writing their own original fairy tales and carefully sketching one of their storybook characters. From brave knights and clever princesses to talking animals and mythical creatures, each drawing reflected the creativity and personality of its young creator.

Just across town at Petal Middle School, eighth graders in Mrs. Erin Bilbo’s class took those illustrations and transformed them into something extraordinary — handcrafted puppets. Before they began bringing these characters to life, students studied the work of legendary puppeteer Jim Henson, learning how storytelling and craftsmanship combine to create memorable characters.

Armed with inspiration and puppet crafting skills, each eighth grader developed a detailed plan to transfer the second graders’ character designs into three-dimensional puppet form. They carefully considered color, texture, shape, and personality traits to ensure the final product stayed true to the original artwork. What began as pencil drawings soon became vibrant, expressive puppets stitched together with creativity and care.

In addition, a separate group of eighth grade students put their artistic skills to work by constructing a puppet theatre and designing two custom backdrops. This project was made possible through funding from the Petal Education Foundation Mini Grant Program, which supports innovative classroom experiences across the district.

“This grant is a beautiful example of what happens when collaboration meets creativity,” said Christy Hinnant, Executive Director of the Petal Education Foundation. “Seeing our Petal Primary students dream up characters and our Petal Middle School students bring those dreams to life through art is a perfect reflection of the heart behind the Petal Education Foundation mini-grants. This project didn’t just fund supplies, it sparked imagination, fostered innovation, and connected students across campuses in a way that made learning come alive.”

From storytelling and illustration to design and stage construction, this cross-campus project highlights the power of hands-on learning and the strength of collaboration within the Petal School District. Most importantly, it shows students — both young and old — that their ideas matter and that, with teamwork, even the smallest sketch can become something magical.
