Dr. Carey Roberts Named 2026 Petal School District Academic Hall of Fame Inductee

The Petal School District (PSD) and Petal Education Foundation (PEF) is proud to announce Dr. Carey Roberts as an inductee into the Academic Hall of Fame. A 1989 graduate of Petal High School (PHS), Dr. Roberts is being recognized for his outstanding achievements in higher education, scholarship, and academic leadership, as well as his commitment to intellectual inquiry and service.

Dr. Roberts currently serves as a Professor of History and Online Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Liberty University. Throughout his career, he has held academic and administrative positions at several respected institutions, including the University of South Carolina, the South Caroliniana Library, The Papers of John C. Calhoun, Arkansas Tech University, and Yorktown University. In these roles, he has contributed to program development, institutional advancement, and student success.

Dr. Roberts' academic journey began in Petal and led him to the University of South Carolina, where he earned both his Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in History. His studies laid the foundation for a career dedicated to teaching, research, and academic leadership.

During his career, Dr. Roberts has developed a strong reputation for his scholarship in early American intellectual and economic history. His research focuses on the American Founding, monetary and banking history, and southern literature. Through numerous publications and lectures, he has made meaningful contributions to these fields and continues to engage in scholarly work that advances understanding of American history.

In addition to his teaching and research, Dr. Roberts has demonstrated impactful leadership in higher education. He has served as a department chair and associate dean and has played an active role in university assessment and accreditation efforts. His leadership has helped shape academic programs and foster environments that support both faculty and student growth.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Roberts is deeply committed to service. He has served as a ruling elder in both the Presbyterian Church of America and the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, reflecting his dedication to mentorship, leadership, and community engagement. He also serves on the board of the Abbeville Institute, a scholarly organization focused on the study of the American South.

The PSD Academic Hall of Fame was created to honor graduates who have made significant contributions to their fields and serve as exemplary role models for current students. Dr. Carey Roberts exemplifies these qualities through his scholarship, leadership, and commitment to service.
