Purpose of Modified Calendar/Petal +
The Petal School District Board of Trustees first adopted the modified school calendar in January 2021. This calendar allows for teachers to proactively address the traditional decline in student achievement that is observed following the summer break and to provide targeted interventions to respond to student needs in a timelier fashion.
Multiple instructional intersession times are built into the modified calendar. The planning team chose to call these intersessions “Petal +” because of the additional opportunities to advance and enhance student learning while providing time throughout the school year for family bonding and staff breaks.
Each campus develops interventions and enrichment programs to meet the needs of the students. Students attend for six hours each day with breakfast and lunch provided. Transportation is also provided for all students. All elementary students will receive a math and ELA block of instruction. Activity blocks will be chosen by the student and parents from a list of available options.
