•  Petal School District "Values and Vision" Awards
    The Petal School District “Values and Vision Award” is presented during the annual Petal Homecoming Pregame festivities.  Nominations by letter of recommendation can be mailed to the Petal Education Foundation Office. 
                    Criteria for this award are as follows:
    Award can be presented to an individual, organization/club, or business
    Award cannot be given to an employee of the Petal School District
    Award can be presented to a person retired, five years or more, from the Petal School District
    Applicant must have contributed significantly to the Petal School District, (contribution does not have to include financial contributions, but may include time and service.)
    Applicant must be involved in the community or have given back to the community

     H R Nobles
     H. R. Nobles
     Selected this year as the Petal School District’s “Values and Vision” Award Winner is Mr. H. R. Nobles. Mr. Nobles was an integral part of the vision to incorporate the city of Petal and thereby, allow for the creation of a separate school district. He was appointed the first superintendent of the Petal Municipal Separate School District. He led the district through the formative years that included a school bond-issue campaign, the building of two new schools, and a statewide teacher strike.
    Mr. Nobles is a 1949 graduate of Sumrall High School. He attended Pearl River Junior College where he played football. He attended Auburn University and the University of Southern Mississippi where he graduated with a B.S. Degree in 1953 and then obtained a Masters and Specialist Degree in School Administration and Biology. In 1953 he began coaching and teaching in classrooms around the area and continued until 1963. While at Lucedale, MS he was selected to coach in the Mississippi All Star Football Game in Jackson. Both in Lucedale and Petal his team won the Desoto Conference title. He later became a high school principal in Leakesville, Prentiss, Wiggins and Petal.
    In July 1976 he became the Superintendent of this separate school district with $10,000.00 and no budget. Mr. Nobles retired from this position in 1987 but remained active in educational affairs. He served on the 1994 Strategic Planning Team and was appointed to the Board of Trustees for Pearl River Community College by the Forrest County Board of Supervisors. Mr. Nobles currently serves as co-chairman of that board and is a member of the building and grounds committee.
    He is an active member of Carterville Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and is on the hospital visitation committee as well as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.
    Mr. Nobles has been married to Betty Riley Nobles for sixty-one years. Their family includes Butch and Cindy Nobles of Oak Grove, Debbie of Petal, John and Nancy of Windermere, Florida and David and Kristi Nobles of Petal. They have six grandchildren: Brian and his wife Keri of Brandon, MS, Heather and husband; Danny of New Orleans, LA, Justin and wife; Jacy of Jacksonville, NC, Sarah Nobles of Flowood, MS, Mary Kathryn Nobles of Oak Grove, MS and John Nobles of Petal, MS. H.R. and Betty have three great grandchildren.
